HOLSTEIN PURSUES SUCCESS IN NEVADA
Jul 11, 2012
Chevelle Holstein knows what kind of bowler she is. After winning a pair of state titles, she knows she’s an Ebonite Pursuit-S.
Holstein, from Sparks, Nev., used the high performance ball to win a pair of state titles at the Nevada State Youth Tournament at Coconut Bowl in Sparks.
The Pursuit-S was the only ball she used while rolling a 615 series in Team, 734 in Doubles and 716 in Singles for a total of 2,065. The 716 gave Holstein the Scratch Singles title, and the 2,065 was enough for the Scratch All-Events title.
“I felt really comfortable the whole time,” said Holstein, a 15-year-old right-hander. “I had a lot of family and friends watching. I’ve bowled the state tournament before, but I never bowled that well before.”
Holstein was using the Pursuit-S, Ebonite’s high-performance ball that gives her good length, and reacts with a strong mid-lane continuation.
“I liked the control I had with the Pursuit-S,” said Holstein, who holds a career high game of 298, and a high series of 789. “Mine gets down the lane really nice, and holds the line on the back end.”
Holstein has had plenty of advice when it comes to Ebonite equipment. Her coach is none other than Hall of Fame bowler and former Ebonite District Sales Manager Pam Buckner.
“I’ve been working with her for two years now, and she’s been great,” said Holstein. “She taught me how to control my timing and my speed. I tend to rush the line a bit, and she got me to slow down a lot.”
The hard has work paid off, as Holstein finished second in the 2010 Teen Masters Girls Under 14 Division, and won the 2011 Nevada Pepsi Youth Bowling Championships title. But Holstein says Buckner’s work isn’t just with her on her physical game.
“Pam has taught me a lot on the mental side as well,” she said. “She’s shown me how to deal with my emotions and to stay focused on making good shots.”
The next challenge was a daunting task for Holstein, as she prepared for the ongoing Bowling’s U.S. Women’s Open, presented by the Brands of Ebonite International. The preliminaries were held at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., June 21-26, with the finals being contested outdoors under the famous Reno arch!
“It would be cool to bowl under the sign,” said Holstein. “It’s only about 20 minutes away from me.”
Holstein worked hard to prepare for the challenge of competing against the likes of Kelly Kulick, a two-time U.S. Women’s Open champ and Ebonite Staff Member. Holstein
“I want to get as far as I can in the tournament,” said Holstein. “I don’t just want to make a good showing. I’m going to Bowl to Win.”
