HAILE IN PURSUIT OF FIRST 800 SERIES AT 13

Josef Haile of Reading, Pa., used the Ebonite Pursuit to record the first 800 series of his young bowling career on June 11.
The 13-year-old 8th grader used Ebonite’s high-performance ball to record games of 279, 289 and 243 for an 811 series in the Monday Night Scholastic league at Berks Lanes in nearby Sinking Spring.
“It’s a great feeling of accomplishment,” said Haile, whose previous high series was 780. “I’m proud of myself and glad I could finally have an 800 series.”
Haile has bowled since he was five years old, and averaged 208 in league this past season. After starting with a 279 game, Haile thought he was going to finally beat his career high game of 299.
“I had the first 10 strikes, and I thought this was going to be it,” said Haile of his chase for perfection. “But I left a 10 pin, and had to settle for 289.”
During the third and final game, Haile said he did his best to remain calm and throw good shots.
“I added it up before I started the third game, and I knew the score,” he said. “I just kept telling myself to stay relaxed and to concentrate on taking one ball at a time.”
If anything, he says his mother, Margie, was more excited than he was.
“She’s usually more nervous than I am,” said Haile. “Mom tries not to let it show. What’s great is that she’s there every time when I bowl.”
The Pursuit Haile used was drilled by Ryan May of May’s Bowling and Billiards. Haile said the Pursuit was the first Ebonite ball he’s ever used, and that the high-performance asymmetric ball wouldn’t be the last.
“It’s a nice, aggressive ball, and the carry is amazing,” said Haile. “Our center has put down a heavier house condition for us this summer, and the Pursuit matches up really well.”
As for future goals, Haile says he wants to get his perfect 300 game, another 800 series, and eventually be a professional bowler.
“I know it’s a lot of hard work, but I put in a lot of practice time, and try to learn from my mistakes,” he said. “With Ebonite equipment, I know I will improve, and I will Bowl to Win.”
