Couch Wins Second Consecutive Dick Weber Open Title

Couch and Patrick Allen Hit the Winner’s Circle Using the Ebonite Total NV
HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. - In defending champion style, Ebonite staff player Jason Couch took home his second consecutive Dick Weber Open title and became the first No. 1 seed to win a stepladder final since February 2005*. Both Couch and his opponent, Patrick Allen, came into the televised match using Ebonite’s new Total NV ball; however, Couch dominated the match and toppled PA, 258-236.
“It’s not often that you see two guys going head-to-head for the win using the same ball. Even though their drillings were distinctly different, the Total NV proved it could make the shot as the lanes changed dramatically throughout the match,” said Ebonite brand manager Ed Gallagher.
“Patrick was on a high, still fresh off his win two weeks ago. Jason simply made short course of the lanes, reading them quickly and with accuracy. He just overpowered them with each throw while PA caught the breakdown.”
Allen used two Total NV balls during the match because the left lane hooked more than the right. The first was drilled with the Pin 4.5”, mass at 70 degrees with a small hole. The second was laid out with the Pin at 5”, mass at 90 degrees with a small hole. Although they appeared shiny on television, both balls were slightly scuffed.
Couch went with a weaker layout of the Pin at 5”, mass at 90 degrees and sanded with 1000-grit Abralon knowing that he could alter his ball speed to match up.
A lefty from Clermont, Fla., Couch’s win solidifies his 07-08 Tour exemption and puts him seventh in points with a 226.58 average. He took home $25,000.
PA, also a lefty from Fla., currently stands in 14th in points and 16th in average. The Dick Weber Open is Couch’s first title this season while Allen celebrated his first title of the season at the H&R Block Classic, Jan. 7.
