COLUMBIA 300 BRINGS SUCCESS AT WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS
Jul 03, 2012
Northern California bowlers Sharon Aronson and Tammy Lewis made their way to the top of the Scratch All-Events and Scratch Singles standings at the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships in Reno, Nev.
Aronson, a California USBC Association Hall of Famer from Turlock, had 761 in singles, 721 in doubles and 685 in team for a 2,167 scratch all-events total. Lewis, of San Jose, closed her singles competition with a 297 game for a 778 singles total and the lead in scratch singles.
“I re-engineered my grip before I came up here and talked to a few people about some new equipment, so that helped,” Aronson told Bowl.com.
Prior to their trip to the National Bowling Stadium, Aronson and Lewis both drilled equipment from the Brands of Ebonite International. Aronson drilled an Ebonite Pursuit-S high-performance ball, while Lewis was fitted for the Columbia 300 Omen.
Jason Walton of Yosemite Lanes Pro Shop and an Ebonite Regional Staff member said the ladies wanted to drill equipment they could use to break the lanes down properly.
“Sharon needed something to read the middle part of the lane, and not react crazy off the pattern,” he said. “The Pursuit-S definitely fit the bill.
“Tammy likes stuff that checks up stronger because of her higher ball speed. She was able to get to that look with the Omen, and keep it for a longer period of time.”
Using the Columbia 300 Omen, Lewis nearly rolled the first 300 game of the 2012 Championships. A 4-6-7 split kept her from perfection. She says she was determined to not leave a 10 pin on her final ball.
“I left at least 15 10-pins in the team event,” said Lewis, the owner of 33 perfect games. “I felt confident and had the drive.”
Lewis added 634 in doubles and 609 in team to finish with a 2,021 all-events score, which is good for 10th in Scratch All-Events.
“I wasn’t expecting to have the lead when I left the Stadium,” said Lewis. “Holding onto this title would be huge. You don’t expect things like this.”
Walton says it was a true team effort for the Northern California group. Aronson and Lewis were proof that the right ball made all the difference.
“The ladies are great players and matched up well,” said Walton. “They broke the lane condition down well, and made great shots when they needed them.”
“I bowled with some great ladies who played the lanes the same,” said Aronson. “We tried to create a shot and were able to accomplish that.”
