65-year-old man bowls first 300

Jun 19, 2009

During his half-century bowling, Franklin Johnson has seen many changes to the sport, the equipment and the venues.

One thing Johnson has never seen during the past 50 years was a score card with a “300” next to his name; that all changed June 10, when the 65-year-old Johnson bowled his first 300 game using Ebonite’s Complete NV.

“I was so excited I was shaking all over,” Johnson said, his enthusiasm clear in his thick Georgia accent.

Several years ago, Johnson came close to a 300; using the Ebonite Raid he shot a 299.

Early this year the Brunswick, Ga., man bought a Complete NV from Cliff Barnes at Cliff Barnes Pro Shop in Warner Robbins, Ga.

“I told him then that this was going to be the ball,” Barnes said. “I told him ‘Frank this is going to be the ball to get you a 300.’”

And about five months later Barnes’ prediction came true.

“I love this ball,” Johnson said of the Complete NV. “It turns good; it has an easy release and a smooth roll.”

Johnson said he is going to hold on to his Complete NV for a while and plans to get one of Ebonite’s new releases although he does not know which one.

“It will definitely be an Ebonite ball,” he said. “I’m not using anything but Ebonite.”
