Ebonite Staffers Dick Allen and Tommy Jones finished first and second respectively in the PBA South Region Canton (Ga.) Open at Cherokee Lanes on May 8th.
Allen, Columbia, S.C., qualified fourth for match play, and won eight matches en route to his 10th PBA Regional title. Jones, Mauldin, S.C., qualified seventh and won six of eight games in finishing second.
Allen’s match play run began with a three-game sweep of Tom Tornow, Augusta, Ga., (192-192, 201-168, 236-213). Allen then squared off against Randy Weiss, also from Columbia, S.C., whom Allen eliminated from the season-ending Dick Weber PBA Playoffs championship. Their match in Canton was a best-of-three, and Allen won 2-1 (164-227, 204-200, 235-223).
Jones made his way to the finals by finishing seventh during qualifying. From there, he beat Mark Langford, Lincolnton, N.C., 3-0 (214-145, 257-177, 213-184), and Christopher McSwain, Kings Mountain, N.C., 2-1 (224-185, 174-200, 258-203), to advance to the Round of 4.
In the semifinal rounds, Allen was matched against guest entry Anthony Churchey, Madison, Ala., while Jones faced off with PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss, Alpharetta, Ga. Allen was able to get by Churchey, 202-193, and Jones beat Voss 221-213 to set up the All-Ebonite title match.
In a high-scoring affair, Allen defeated Jones, 242-233 for the $2,500 first prize. Jones received $1,300 for second. Churchey and Voss received $850 each for advancing to the Round of 4.
Ironically, Allen and Jones entered the Canton Open seeking their 10th PBA Regional titles. Both bowlers were riding a wave of success on the 2010-11 Tour season. Allen won the inaugural Dick Weber PBA Playoffs in Indianapolis for third career Tour title. Jones posted four top 10 finishes, including a third place finish at the U.S. Open in N. Brunswick, N.J.
