Post Wrist turning and today's bowling balls
Hey Gang,

I'm getting back into the fun of competition bowling after being out for over 5 years. I was out throwing some practice shots with my Savage when the pro shop guy came up to me and told me I was getting into a bad habit of throwing with a suitcase grip. I was throwing my ball, rotating the wrist to finish with a handshake (Horizontal palm to vertical palm, without a bent wrist.) He instructed me that I should keep the palm of my hand behind the ball the whole time, so my palm finished facing the ceiling. He summarized I was throwing the ball incorrectly (rotating my wrist) to compensate for a bad drill pattern.

Are the bowling balls so advanced now that they don't require any turning of the wrist? Or should I get a second opinion? This has really been bugging me for the past couple of days, as what he told me goes against the grain of what I have been taught.

No one make a Miracle ball that will hook and strike by itself. You must have some turn on the ball for it to react properly. there is a little trick I teach . Get a football and hold it in your bowling hqnd with each end facing left and right. Stand in front of a chair or couch. Hole the ball in this position with your palm facing the cieling. Now begin your bowling swing keeping the palm of your hand facing forward, Let the ball go and make it spiral into the chair. This simulates the proper hand release. Keep doing this until it become muscle memory and you do it automaticly all the time.

BubbaRay,

Thank you for the reply. If I understand correctly, finishing with my hand in the handshake position (thumb 10 o'clock) is no longer the accepted method of release. If I start with my thumb in the 2 o'clock position, then it should finish in the 2 o'clock position. Instead of sidespin, I want to impart topspin, letting the bowling ball do the work to break back to the pocket.

My next question is, how is the rev rate controlled? Is it now purely with arm speed?

Your hand should end up in the handshake position with the thumb pointing at 12 o'clock for the proper release. Rev rate is controlled by the amount of turn and axis tilt you put on the ball at the point of release.

Check this over at the Hammer message board . I posted this over there.

If you are going to sell a ball , list it in the for sale section and no ebay links
